Introducing Labor Ladies!!!

Yesterday (September 5th, 2024) was the inaugural meeting for the new group on campus - Labor Ladies! The meet-n-greet was a huge success, with nearly 2 dozen students who were mostly women in traditionally male-dominated labor fields (Auto Mechanics, electricians, carpentry, etc.) As the name of the group implies, these women are the target audience for this group.

The event had free food from Jimmy Johns, and speeches from the club’s President Samantha Albert as well as some of the women instructors from those pathways. Advisor to the group and student retention coach, Diandra Marbley says of the group “it’s a safe place for women and their allies who are often underrepresented in their fields to be supported by their peers.”

The mission statement of the group is "to provide a supportive and inclusive community that motivates and advocates for the success of women pursuing educational and career goals in trades. We believe in the potential of every woman to excel in traditionally male-dominated trades and are committed to breaking down barriers, shattering stereotypes, and fostering an environment where women can reach their full potential."

The energy from a space like this cannot be overstated, being among working women united for the purpose of mutually empowering each other was so uplifting. It was like living in an alternate history where after World War 2 women were allowed to keep their jobs. In the near future this exciting group will reconvene for regular meetings, events, and volunteer opportunities!

This is the vibe

If you are a woman, non-gender conforming person, or just a male ally who wants to get involved you absolutely should! People who join and volunteer with this organization are eligible to walk across stage with a purple cord, which sounds honestly amazing! If you are interested in joining you can at their Campus Labs page.
